Ernie Banks Has Passed Away

"Mr. Cub" passed away on Friday, January 23, 2015 at 83 years old. Despite never playing a single inning of high school baseball, Ernie Banks is one of the finest power hitters in baseball history. It's is believed that Banks was discovered by the Kansas City Monarchs during a pick-up softball game when he was 19 years old. Banks played for the Monarchs from 1950-1953 and was sold to the Chicago Cubs during the 1953 season.

Banks made his MLB debut on September 26, 1971 and was the first African-American player in Cubs history. In 1954, Ernie Banks hit 19 homeruns and 79 RBI while finishing second to Wally Moon for the 1954 NL Rookie of the Year. By 1955, Banks was one of the best players in the majors hitting 44 homeruns and 117 RBI. In 1958 and 1959, Banks hit a staggering 92 homeruns and 272 RBI on his way to back-to-back NL MVP Awards. Ernie Banks played 19 seasons with the Chicago Cubs and appeared in 14 MLB All-Star Games. He is the Cubs All-time leader in homeruns (512) and RBI (1,636).

Ernie Banks was one of the finest human beings that ever graced the face of the earth. He had a smile and personality that lit up the people around him. May he rest in peace.
