The Kansas City Chiefs drafted Willie Lanier out of Morgan State during the second round of the 1967 AFL/ NFL Draft, becoming the first African-American middle linebacker in AFL/ NFL history. He started 10 games during his rookie year and quickly established himself as one of pro football's premier defensive players. From 1968 through 1975, Lanier was selected to eight consecutive AFL All-Star Games/ NFL Pro Bowls. In Super Bowl IV, Lanier recorded seven tackles and one INT as the Chiefs defeated the 12-points favorite, Minnesota Vikings by a score of 23-7. Lanier is still regarded as one of the most popular players in Chiefs history. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1986 and was named to ther NFL's 75th Anniversary All-Time team.
