Art Shamsky was signed by the Cincinnati Reds as free agent out of the University of Missouri Columbia in 1959. He made his major league debut in 1965 and spent his first three seasons with the Reds. He was traded to the last-place New York Mets in 1968. In 1969, Shamsky became a super-star in New York. He increased his batting average from .238 in 1968 to .300 in 1969. Shamsky's increased production at the plate helped the Mets made a 27 game improvement and captured their first Division Title. Shamksy continued to perform during the post season as well. He batted .538 during the 1969 NLCS and helped the Miracle Mets win their first World Series championship.
