Mario Lemieux Autograph Signing Pittsburgh Penguins November 2013

On Saturday November 9th, Pittsburgh Penguins Class of 1997 Hockey Hall of Fame centre, Mario Lemieux will participate in a public autograph signing at the Canada Sportscard and Memorabilia Expo at the Toronto International Centre in Mississauga, Ontario.

In 1984, the Pittsburgh Penguins were in serious trouble. The drew dismal crowds and were in danger of relocating. Little did they know that an 18 year old kid from Montreal was going to change everything. The Penguins used the #1 Overall Pick of the 1984 NHL Draft to select Mario Lemieux. In his first NHL season, Lemieux scored 80 points, made his first NHL All-Star team and was named 1984-85 NHL Rookie of the Year. With Lemieux at centre, the Penguins gradually improved over the next few seasons. By 1991, their transformation from NHL doormat to Stanley Cup Champions was complete after winning the first of back-to-back championships. Lemieux played in 10 NHL All-Star Games and scored 616 gareer goals, but the biggest accomplishments lies within his love for the City of Pittsburgh and to the Penguins. In 1993, he famously announced that he was battling Hodgkin's lymphoma. He took a few months off before returning to the ice while still undergoing radiation treatments. He played only 22 games of the 1993-1994 season before he was unable to play due to the continued treatments. Lemieux missed the entire 1994-95 season before returning to action during the for the 1995-96 season, leading the NHL in goals, assists and points scored while capturing the Hart Memorial Trophy as the NHL's Most Valuable Player. Lemiuex retired after the 1997 season and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Mario became partial owner of the team in 1999. He came out of retirement in 2000 and was a player/ owner of the team. He retired as a player again in 2006, but as an owner, he led the team to it's third Stanley Cup Championship in 2009.
