Jim Bunning was signed by the Detroit Tigers out of Xavier University in 1950. He made his MLB debut in 1955 and played nine seasons with the Tigers. During his time in Detroit, Bunning played in five MLB All-Star Games and led the NL in strikeouts during the 1959 and 1960 seasons. Bunning joined the Philadelphia Phillies in 1964 and continued to be one of the best pitchers in baseball. On June 21, 1964 (Father's Day), Bunning struckout 10 New York Mets batters en-route to the seventh game in MLB history. The game was the first National League perfect game in 84 years. Bunning played the 1969 season with the Dodgers and Pirates and returned to the Phillies for the 1970 and 1971 seasons. At the time of his retirement, Jim Bunning's 2,855 career strikeouts was the second highest total in MLB history. Only Walter Johnson's 3,509 strikeout total was higher.
