Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Sandy Koufax played just one season of college baseball (University of Cincinnati) before he was signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1954. Koufax made his MLB debut on June 24, 1955 when he was 19 years old. Koufax struggled throughout his first six MLB seasons. He posted just one winning season (1957) and led the majors with 17 wild pitches in 1958. Despite the struggles, Koufax was a part of two World Series Championship teams in 1955 and 1959. Things turned around for Sandy in 1961 when he posted an 18-13 record, led the majors with 269 strikeouts and was selected to his first All-Star Game. After his breakout season on 1961, Koufax put together the greatest five-year stretch in the history of baseball. From 1962 - 1966, no one could hit Koufax. Over that stretch, Koufax won 111 games, won five consecutive ERA titles, three pitching triple crowns, three NL Cy Young Awards, two World Series Championships, two World Series MVP Awards, one MVP award (1963) threw four no-hitters and one perfect game. Koufax decided to retire in 1966, at the ripe old age of 30. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972.
