Most Exciting Moment in Tampa Bay Sports History

Is there anything that can top what happened last night at Tropicana Field? Tampa Bay Rays fans will be talking about the miracle ending to the 2011 regular season for the rest of their lives. The entire Bay Area hasn't been the electrified since "Old Sparky" was retired. I've never seen or heard anything like this. The ratings for all the local sports radio shows has got to be through the dome.

I watched the Rays complete the biggest single season turn around in MLB history in 2008, and even went to Game 2 of the 2008 World Series. I watched Ronde Barber return that interception against the Eagles in the NFC Championship game. I was high fiving people in their cars down in Ybor City when the Bucs won the Super Bowl (Don't tell mom). I watched as the Tampa Bay Lightning took care of the Calgary Flames in one of the most exciting Stanley Cup Finals ever. Those are just a few of the amazing sports moments we've had, but I really think that this regular season game between the Rays and Yankees, coupled with the Orioles beating Boston, is the most exciting moment in Tampa Bay Sports history.

Coming back from being nine games back in the month of September... going into the bottom of the eighth, with just one hit against the Yankees... Sean Rodriquez taking a HBP to walk in a run... Upton with his sacrifice fly... then our superstar, our legend, Evan Longoria, hitting a monster 3-run home run to get within one. I've never been so happy, yet still losing in my life. Then when I saw that Dan Johnson was pinch hitting for Sam Fuld, I KNEW was what going to happen! No stranger to dramtic home runs, Johnson, hit a huge homerun in 2008 against Jonathan Paplebon and the Red Sox. He did it again in 2010 against the BoSox, so when he got up, I KNEW WHAT HE WAS GOING TO DO! Down to the last strike of the entire season, Johnson hit the most dramatic home run over the right field fence! What really amazing, is that Rays announcer, Brian Anderson, actually called both the Longoria home run in the eighth and Johnson's in the ninth! HE KNEW IT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN TOO!

Carl Crawford's Dropped Ball Helps Tampa Bay Rays Get Into Playoffs

As I was watching the Rays complete their incredible seven run come-from-behind win against the New York Yankees, I couldn't believe my ears when I heard that the Orioles had just beaten the Red Sox on a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth. The absolute irony behind the final play of the Red Sox season is amazing.

The Orioles, who were playing for nothing but pride, had just tied the game at 3-3, and had a runner on base when Robert Andino hit a line drive single to left field. Who better to have in left field, than a 4x All Star, 4x Stolen Base League Leader and former Gold Glove winner, Carl Crawford. He's been one of the best players in MLB over the last decade and was the face of the franchise for the Devil Rays/ Rays, so naturally, Boston signed him to a huge contract this past off season.

The final play of the 2011 season really puts a sour note on the worst season of Crawford's career. As the ball came towards Crawford, he slid, but was unable to make the catch. As the runner headed towards home, he dropped the ball then made a throw that landed halfway between home plate and third base. The winning run easily scored and the Red Sox postseason hopes were hanging by a thread as the Rays and Yankees are still tied at 7 in the bottom of the 12th inning. Moments later, the face of the Rays, Evan Longoria, belted a line drive home run that barely cleared the left field wall at Tropicana, sending the Rays to the postseason and the Red Sox home packing. To add injury to injury, Longoria's homerun barely cleared the 3 or 4 feet tall left field fence at the Trop. The fence used to be higher, but they lowered it in 2007 due to the guy who made great over the wall catches out there. That guy's name, you guessed it... Carl Crawford.

Crawford will recover and have an outstanding career with the Boston Red Sox. But for the moment, I can't help but wonder, "Has there ever been this much irony on the final day of the year, between a player and his former team?" This was the most amazing finish to any regular season that I have ever seen!

Tampa Bay Rays tie Boston Red Sox for AL Wild Card Race

With a 5-2 victory over the New York Yankees, coupled with a 6-3 Boston Red Sox loss to the Baltimore Orioles, the Tampa Bay Rays have tied the BoSox in the 2011 AL Wild Card race. So here is what's left. Both teams have two games left. Neither team will be able to clinch the Wild Card until the last day of the regular season.

Even though the Rays won the season series 12 games to 6, head to head records are not a factor in the tie breaking process. If both teams end the season with the same record, there will be a one game playoff, after the end of the regular season. The team with the better head-to-head record will be the home team. In this case, it would be the Rays and the game would be played on Thursday, September 29th at Tropicana Field.

Peyton Manning Likely Out for Season

So, it looks like Peyton Manning's neck injury is far more serious than originally suspected. Indianapolis Colts owner, Jim Irsay, posted on his Twitter account:

"I didn't say Peyton out 4season FOR SURE, keeping him on ActiveRoster n taking it month by month/Outside chance of return n December possible."

Of all the years for this to happen, this had to be the year. The passing yards so far have been nothing short of incredible. As of week 3, there are eight NFL quarterbacks that have a good shot at Dan Marino's Alll-Time Single Season Passing record of 5,084 passing yards and there are four quarterbacks on pace to throw 40 touchdowns. If Manning was on pace to break both of these milestones.

To make matters worse, the city of Indianapolis will host Super Bowl XLVI and the AFC Champion will be the home team. Had Manning been healthy and played through all 16 games like he has in every other NFL season he has played in, the Colts certainly would be battling for home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

Action Sports Art Review

If you're looking for a great piece of artwork to show off your college team pride, you've got to check out Actionsportsartcom. I picked up a small, unframed Oklahoma Sooner print a while back to see how the material would react to ink. I took a Sharpie permanent marker and made a 1 inch line on the bottom right corner of the print. It looked fine. No smears, no smudges, even after I ran my finger over it. I tried a gel pen as well, but the ink smeared. If you are going to have someone autograph the print, stick with the Sharpie.

They've got prints and canvas' for some of the biggest colleges in the country. You can even have a frame specially designed for college diplomas. Great gift idea for the college graduate. Their current NCAA Gallery includes:

Alabama Crimson Tide
Arkansas Razorbacks
Auburn Tigers
Clemson Tigers
Florida Gators
Florida State Seminoles
Georgia Bulldogs
LSU
Miami Hurricanes
Michigan Wolverines
Michigan State Spartans
Mississippi State Bulldogs
Nebraska Cornhuskers
Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Oklahoma State Cowboys
Oregon Ducks
Penn State Nittany Lions
South Carolina Gamecocks
TCU
Tennessee Volunteers
North Carolina Tarheels
Virginia Tech Hoakies

Will Dan Marino's Single Season Passing Record be broken in 2011?

In 1984, Miami Dolphins legendary quarterback, Dan Marino, threw for an NFL record, 5,084 passing yards. Dan averaged 317.75 yards per game during his record setting season and as of week two of the 2011 NFL season, there are 5 quarterbacks that are averaging well over 317.75 yards per game. They are:

Tom Brady - 470.0 ypg, on pace for 7,520 passing yards
Cam Newton - 427.0 ypg, on pace for 6,832 passing yards
Philip Rivers - 356.5 ypg, on pace for 5,704 passing yards
Drew Brees - 344.5 ypg, on pace for 5,512 passing yards
Tony Romo - 343.5 ypg, on pace for 5,496 passing yards

It's only been two weeks, and defenses will adjust, but these numbers are simply incredible. It's not a matter of "IF" Dan Marino's single season passing record will be broken this year, but "WHO" will break it. Or even, "How many quarterbacks will pass Marino this year?" This is certainly the year the record falls. Cam Newton will not be on the list. If the Carolina Panthers (0-2) want to start winning football games and want to protect they're franchise player, they will have to start running the ball more. Romo won't make the cut either. He was hurt during week 2, with a fractured rib and a punctured lung. (Ouch!!!) Those injuries take a while to heal and could hinder him all season.

That leaves Brady, Rivers and Brees. They are seasoned vets that get great protection. As the season progresses and defenses catch up, these three will continue to adapt and dominate opponents. Watch out for Aaron Rodgers, he could sneak into the record chase as well. He's completing almost 71% of his passes so far.

Matthew Stafford Injury

"Matthew Stafford, when he's healthy," has got to be the most over used phrase in the NFL for the last few years. You hear it in every fantasy football draft party, every NFL pre-game show, and from every football analyst. Even Kurt Warner said it earlier today.

Did the football gods enact a commandment stating, "Thou shalt not use thy name of Matthew Stafford, without talking about his health."? Seriously, it's just so played out. Besides, couldn't you say that for every single player. "When he's healthy, he's fine." Well, no kidding. There, I've finally got that off my chest.

I really think it's time we give Matt a break. He's had a few injuries, but he's a solid quarterback that is tough as nails. Besides, this guy had a devastating ankle injury, this guy hurt his shoulder and this guy did something to his knee. They turned out okay.

Is the NFL too pass happy?

So Week 1 of the 2011 NFL Season is in the record books, literally. Out of 16 games, there were four 400 yard performances, including 422 passing yards by Carolina Panthers rookie, Cam Newton, and 517 yards by Tom Brady. By the way, I read an article Sunday evening, where someone pointed out that Brady had never thrown for 422 yards in a game. Then came Monday Night against the Dolphins. 517 yards later, that article is no where to be found.

To give you an idea about how incredible four 400 yard passing games is, Hall of Fame quarterbacks, Troy Aikman and Fran Tarkenton never reached the 400 yard mark.

The numbers look very impressive at first, but after looking at the win/ loss columns, I'm not too sure I want my quarterback leading the league is passing yards this year. Of those performances, (Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Cam Newton and Chad Henne). Only Tom Brady led his team to victory. The Patriots beat the Dolphins, who were led by fellow 400 yarder, Chad Henne. Of the top 8 individual receiving yard performances, only Wes Welker's 160 receiving yards went towards a victory, while on the other side of the coin, the teams that posted the top 5 single rushing game performances were 5-0.

Thought here: No matter how much the passing game has opened up over the years, football games are still won and lost right at the line of scrimmage.

Most Underrated Player in MLB - Dexter Fowler

Do a search for "Most Underrate Player in MLB" and you'll find a ton of Top 5 or Top 10 lists with some familiar names like Ryan Zimmerman, Shin-Soo Choo and Starlin Castro. Chances are you'd have to look pretty far to find a list with Colorado Rockies outfielder, Dexter Fowler on it.

"Who is Dexter Fowler?" is what I asked myself when I was looking at the league leaders in triples. In 2009, he finished tied for fifth in MLB in triples. In 2010, he led all MLB, and this year, he's one behind the league leader, Jose Reyes. In fact, in three "almost full" MLB seasons, Fowler has hit 39 triples, which is an average of 13 a year. Now I know this is a bit of a stretch, but if the 25 year old outfielder averages 13 triples for 17 more years, that would put him at 260 career triples, which would be good enough for third place All-Time, right after Sam Crawford and Ty Cobb. I'm not ready to put him into the Hall of Fame just yet, but his career is definitely off to a good start.

For the longest time, I had Zimmerman as the most underrated player in MLB, but since he's started to show up on everyone's list, it's hard to say he's still underrated. He certainly doesn't fly under the radar anymore. So, sorry Zimm, people do appreciate you now. :-) What puts Fowler over the edge is that his Wikipedia page is one of the shortest I've ever seen for a MLB player. Don't worry Dexter, you keep doing what you do and you'll be fine.

Lee Roy Selmon October 20, 1954 - September 4, 2011

I learned last night the the Tampa Bay area lost it's favorite resident, Lee Roy Selmon. He was 56 years old. We've had plenty of fine people who have called Tampa home, but there was no one who represented the bay area better than Lee Roy Selmon.

The Bucs used the teams very first pick to take Mr. Selmon as #1 overall selection of the 1976 NFL Draft. He played nine seasons for the Bucs, before retiring in 1985. As awful as the early Buccaneer teams were, one player always stood out, Lee Roy Selmon. Among his many awards and achievements, he was a 6x Pro Bowler, a 5x All-Pro and the 1979 Defensive Player of the Year.

In 1993, he began working at the University of South Florida and laid the groundwork for a successful football program. As a former USF Student, I will always remember the times I would see him on campus. I was able to get an autograph for him once, which I gave as a gift to someone who helped me out quite a bit in college. He worked very hard to get the Bulls to were they are today.

Mr. Selmon is so beloved in Tampa Bay that one of the areas main thoroughfares was is named the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway. He may no longer be with us physically, but his legacy as Tampa Bay's Finest Citizen will live on for a long, long time. Rest in Peace, our friend.

Colts Back Up QB - Fantasy Football

The Indianapolis Colts have Peyton Manning listed as doubtful for their opening game against the Houston Texans. If you're wondering who their back up QB is, it's Kerry Collins.

He hasn't played much this pre-season, but you don't get to play 17 years in the NFL without being a solid QB. After playing very sparingly the first 12 games of 2010, he finished strong, throwing 9 TDs, 3 INTS, and 1,000 yards during the last four games.

If your looking for a QB is week one, Collins would be a solid option. He won't be a starter one Peyton is healthy again, but depending on the extent of Manning's injury, you may want to handcuff him together.

How much are my baseball cards worth?

Babe Ruth Gold Card Collectible

That's the question collectors have asked themselves since the first baseball cards started popping up in the late in the mid-19th century. If you've got the right cards and they are in the right condition, your collection could be worth quite a bit. The Beckett Official Price Guide to Baseball Cards is a great place to start, especially if you have some of the lesser know cards. Beckett has been a leader in assessing the value of baseball cards since the late 1980's and they are one of the most respected companies in the business.

Pros and Cons of using the Beckett Official Price Guide to Baseball Cards

Pros: Beckett has been providing card values for years. Many card dealers and shops base their pricing directly on the prices listed in their monthly magazine. The guide is great for looking up some of the more obscure sets.

Cons: The guide doesn't provide you with real-time pricing. Since the value of a card weighs heavily on a players popularity, if the popularity should slip, the value of a card could drop dramaticly. The reverse could also could also happen. Active players would be more prone to changes in their popularity than retired or deceased players.

Franklin Mint

Another way to look see how much your baseball card collection might be worth is looking up your cards on Ebay. Collectors have been selling on the site since started in the mid nineties.

Pros and Cons of using Ebay

Pros: Ebay gives you a "real-time" value of what your card could be worth. You can watch the actual exchange between the asking price of the seller and what the buyer is willing to pay.

Cons: Auction prices can rise dramaticly during the closing minutes of an auction and if your not "watching" or bidding on the item, you might not see the actual final price. Another thing to consider is that their are a lot of reprints on Ebay. A reprint is essentially a copy of the original card. You must be very careful to read the entire description to see if the card listed is an original or reprint.

I'd recommend using both the Beckett Guide as well as Ebay as tools. Use the guide to become familiar with what your collection should be worth, then look them up on Ebay to see what the real-time prices are. You could sell your cards on Ebay, but you will be subject to some fees and commissions, which definately cuts in to your bottom line. You will also need to take pictures of the cards and create accurate item descriptions. Selling to your local dealer is a lot easier. You might only receive 25% - 50% of book value, but you get paid instantly, you don't have to do any of the leg work, and if you don't think they are giving you a fair deal, you can simply walk away.
