Joe Dimaggio's 56 game hitting streak

It was 70 years ago today (May 15, 1941) that Joe Dimaggio went 1-4 in a 13-1 loss to the White Sox that began his incredible 56 game hitting streak. It lasted until July 16. Dimaggio took home the MVP along with the World Series Title. Pretty amazing considering this was the same year Ted Williams hit .406, which is another feat many people don't think will be reached.

It's been 70 years and no one else has even come close. Pete Rose had 44 in 1978 and Paul Molitor hit in 39 consecutive in 1987. Next to Cy Young's 511 wins, this may be a record that is never broken.

But then again... all records are made to be broken.

Mike Piazza 2013 Hall of Fame Eligible

I loved watching Mike Piazza hit. He took a lot of criticism over his defensive skills, he could really hit. He'll be eligible for the Hall of Fame in 2013 and should be in on the first ballot. He spent his first 6 1/2 seasons with the LA Dodgers and eight more with the New York Mets.

That brings us to the discussion of were he stands all time. Is he the best catcher in Mets history? Was he the best catcher in Dodgers history? Gary Carter was Amazin' and is in the Hall of Fame already. Roy Campanella played only ten years, but was an 8x MLB All-Star and a 3x MVP. I say he's right behind Gary Carter and Roy Campanella as the #2 catcher for both teams.

Where does Mike stack up against the greats like Johnny Bench, Carlton Fisk, Ivan Rodriquez and Yogi Berra? I have him at #7 All-Time.

All Time Greatest MLB Catchers:

1) Yogi Berra
2) Johnny Bench
3) Roy Campabella
4) Ivan Rodriquez
